First, the comment would have to be studied within context. BUT having said that, it COULD be a great way to open a discussion on where and how resources are being used. The fact is that if safety is paramount the simple solution is to not fly. Flying entails x risks and those risks must be measured and dealt with.

The environment changes. Technology changes. Consider that only a few decades ago, the thought of flying the pond on 2 engines was considered foolhardy. ONLY two people in the cockpit? No FE? Women in the cockpit? You're kidding! Right?

I'm not defending the man but would like to know more about the comment and reason for it.

I will be honest I have not read this thread...but Safety right or wrong will always be about MONEY. When it is cost effective to be safer things will be, that is mainly why the FAA Regs are written in Blood.

I didn't hear the quote first hand, but FWIW - someone asked him about why Continental refuses to fly IROs on all transatlantic flights, and his basic response was that it costs too much money.

I'm sure that someone who was there could offer some insight.
