It's a good a/c but it could have been great. It has better performance than an A320, will climb faster, higher and cruise farther. But its systems are mix of 1960's and '90s technology. The best thing on the -800 is the wing. Other than that, the FMS is nothing like an old 757 FMS. A 757 won't overspeed to regain the path.
However, the 737 is a mainline aircraft and as long as its numbers increase I can't complain.

I have never flown the 737, I have been on the MD80 and now I am on the 320 series. I really enjoy the 320, it is a nice package. That said, I am wondering how the 737 performs so much better but can be called a "mediocre" airframe? I think one of the big issues with the 320 is that we are topped at FL390. I have had to slog thru some rough bumps that I might have been able to get above in the 73..... Oh well.
I have been in the 757 jump and note that the 320 isn't much better (accept for the tray table) for systems, so I wouldn't exactly call the 320 "advanced" beyond Boeing designs.
