Default Hotel Drink Discounts

At SWA we very recently learned that our Hotel Committee has been told by the company to no longer negotiate our standard adult beverage drink discount. In most of our hotels we get a pretty good break on domestic draft beer ($1), house wine ($2) and well drinks ($3).

The company says this is for liability reasons but of course it's going to save them some $$$$ too. Of course we didn't get any increase in our per diem in the new contract.

My question is, do any other airlines get drink discounts at the hotel and what do you get?

Noooo! We all used to pretend to be SWA crews in order to get the 3/2/1 deal. I dont know of any other airlines who have any widespread drink discount close to SWA.

It's been all down hill since Herb stopped running that place.

That's really a bum deal, not to make light of your plight but I wish drink deals were my biggest worry right now... but then again, it's all relative... just be thankful you work for a decent airline

Dang, that is too bad. I used to hang with SWA crews when I flew domestic and always had a good time for a couple of bucks. Too good to be a lasting thing, or you guys got an AA (not the airline..) in your hotel committee?

What worries me more is when we get charged for internet access..

Especially since you can stay in a $49 / night Motel Six and get free unlimited wireless. The higher end hotels rip off the customers.

In fact, I just heard on the news last week about phone charges and how they vary at hotels. Of course, the cheap hotels have reasonable if not free long distance. The higher end hotels, one in NYC was quoted as being $14/minute and $16/minute each additional minute. FOR A PHONE CALL????

I dont know of any hotel at my airline that gives us discounts on drinks. We always get food and other discounts though.

That loops around to what you mentioned about committee. Whether the hotel, or the negotiating.

But if I'm not mistaken, FedEx doesn't have to pay for access. Whether it's comp'd, or expensed then reimbursed.

And this isn't directed at you, but cue the standard "yeah, but what are you willing to give up to get that" crowd.

There are a couple of hotels overseas where we get discounts on drinks, but it's a rarity.

...and it's not because it was negotiated by DAL. It's just because it's the practice of that particular hotel.

With that being said, it only makes sense SWA wouldn't want to offer drink discounts.

All they need to do is offer a similar contractual benefit (in terms of value) to replace the one they're taking away, and there is no problem.

Someone had mentioned that 1/2/3 was contractual - is that true?

For the company to claim that it's for liability sounds good until the logic is examined. If an employee has an abuse problem, it's just going to cost them more on a layover. Eliminating a (cost-based) contractual provision does nothing to assist an employee in getting medical help if needed.

As for your question, it varies by hotel at my airline - nothing standard like 1/2/3. Many offer a food discount/room service, very few offer a beverage discount.
