I've got just over 3 years left on my military commitment. Can anyone tell me where to find some good information on pilot hiring forecasts for 2013? I'm still very undecided on whether to get of the military or stay in, but I would like to be set up for success either way. I do not have any civilian ratings...only military. Also, if anyone wants to share their opinion on whether to get out or stay in I am all ears... My hours are primarily in the F/A-18.
MCFlyer,
Don't stay in the military for the money, you won't be happy. Don't get out of the military for the money, you won't be happy. See what I am getting at here? Money is not to be chased, it is to be made. Get out of the military if you don't want to be in the military anymore, PERIOD! If you are wanting a better lifestyle, be home more with the family, I commend you. You will have to make that decision on your own. In my short time of being off active duty, I have talked to buddies that wish they made the "other" choice. Give me a PM if you want more info, I would be glad to talk to you.
Dude, stay in and get your retirement. Smartest thing I ever did. Wish I could say it was be design. Sometimes God is smarter than you. (winking smiley face thingy).
As a retiree I pay $460 A YEAR for the entire family for health insurance. When you do your pay vs future earnings charts, (come on I know you are doing one) don't forget to factor that in. Most people pay that a month.
Dead on Satchip. Best "mistake" I ever made was to stay in and retire. This industry is a wild ride, having that money coming in from Uncle Sam is a great stress reliever.

I think our industry is still going to be in the hole well past 2013. While it is true that the first guys will start retiring again by then, most airlines are overmanned right now and will probably be reluctant to hire in any significant numbers for some time. The days of $250 hr pilot jobs are all but over and will not be coming back. I hope I'm wrong. Fortunately for you, your background (Military Pilot) is highly desired in the Majors and you will be highly competitive when the time does come.
Like the fellas have mentioned before me, get a guard/rsv job, keep your contact list current, and get your ATP. I picked up one controlling UAVS for the ANG. One of your brothers in arms (MC Hornet driver) just joined our unit. PM if you want his contact info. I sleep well at night knowing I have an ANG job that is in such high demand that I can be on fulltime orders with one phone call. Best of luck.
I'll second (or third) the guard/reserve thing. One thing to consider is that if/when you retire from AD, you are flat out done. At 42 years of age or so, you may not be ready for that.
Another thing to consider is the several thousand pilots that have been furloughed and will have to be recalled before any off the street hiring can occur. Just going through that supply of talent could take years.

Hey Patch,
Southwest is not far from those pay rates, in 737s yet.
BD
UPS and FEDEX also, 250k a year isn't hard for a Capt. However, progress will be slow through the seats and both are currently overstaffed and may not see any hiring for a few years. Freight is different than Passenger, volume picks up and a bigger aircraft gets put on the segment number of flights are not increased. Junior base is ANC at UPS and I think overseas for FEDEX. One thing you don't want to do is take a management job at UPS, for the rest of your career you will be held in low regard by every line pilot you come in contact with and during contract negotiations you will be viewed as the one that will scab if a strike is required.

SWA pays well, as does UPS and FEDex. They're in the minority. We'll see $250/hr down the road again (due to inflation), but I don't think our buying power will be any better.

I hope so, but I guess I'm a 'half empty' type person, especially after seeing what's happened in the last couple years.
