What you told him is correct... I did just that several years ago (ok, more than several ) and had some ATP questions but otherwise it was mainly aircraft related... It's up to the examiner though...

I personally didn't have any ATP questions on my ATP+type Captain upgrade. It was with a company check airman and majority of it was systems and then the company Ops Specs and that was it. Thankfully the oral was 45 minutes. Its worth it to be over prepared for an oral and thankfully not hard to do just hard to find the time to do it.

I'm in my 9th year and I don't think I've ever cracked open Part 121 FARs outside of the ATP written. Its about what your company is or is not FAA approved to do.

I had a fed ride for my ATP/type ride in the DC3,I recall there were a few ATP type questions sprinkled into the 3.5 hour oral, but the main thrust was the care and feeding of round engines, and the ancient art of tailwheel ops.

I did my ATP/DC-9 type ride in 96 with a Fed as part of a Capt. upgrade. It was a standard type ride with no specific ATP questions as I recall. I was very well prepared, and that may have factored into it. Your response to him is sound advice.

I finally got my ATP when I checked out in the right seat of the 75/76 (type rating required.) It was just a normal sim checkride, the oral portion is done on a computer nowadays at AA. There was a fed as well as the check airman in the sim. Even though I was in the right seat as an F/O checkout, the fed wanted to see me handle the emergency as a Captain, and told the captain to not intervene. Overall it was like any normal sim checkout with that one exception.

That is how I did it....most of the 121 questions basically cover the ATP stuff....only a couple of just ATP questions..he probably already knows if he is going for a PIC type...good luck.

I got asked in my ATP type ride if an airport perimeter fence was required for a diversion airport? I'd be ready for anything.

You were doing well on the oral.

PTS... The examiner has to check every box off. It's all in the PTS.

Not always true if the check ride is taking place in the 121 world. If the carrier uses an AQP program under SFAR 58 then the issuance of the certificate is based on completion of the training program. If the carrier is non AQP then FAR 121 subpart N and 121 appendix F come into play.
