I've never fed into the shortage stories but I do think one is in the making for a few reasons. 1)65 in three years 2) 1500hrs law 3) New rest rules. All comming into play around the same time. Your thoughts??????????

BTW - it will be interesting to see how the new ATP rule will be played out with the regionals and pilot mills.
I've said it once I'll say it again there was never a shortage of qualified pilots.

Only a shortage of pilots willing to work for 20K per year.

The same will be true in 2012.

What about all the pilots out of ERAU, UND, Purdue, etc and then the gulfstream training academies, Comair academy, Allatps etc? Those pilots have been and will be treading water for the foreseeable future.. "Layoff all you want. Were still making more." So there will be a backlog for at least a decade while the airlines restock... and thats if capacity is kept near current levels. Another merger would not bode well for pilot hiring.

As far as the rest rules impacting this... lets just hold on to our wad for now.

Credit for alternative student loans to fund puppy mill tutitions should remain non-existant for the forseeable future. Also, requiring 1500hr ATP's for entry-level positions will require the 3-400hr wunderkids to first gain experience flight instructing, banner towing, etc as purchasing 1500 hrs thru an "academy" will be a non-starter.

The days of $100,000 Sallie Mae loans for a 400 hr CRJ SIC type rating and guaranteed "airline pilot" job will soon be gone, and all parties involved will be better off.

I'll add my 2 cents:

I'll go you one further. In addition to what you said you can add:

The career, as it stands now, has been severly damaged (pay cuts, pension cuts, benefit cuts, etc). Fewer candidates have entered the industry due to the un-likelyhood of the lucrative mainline career at the end.

Just your run of the mill supply and demand.

Hey guys I haven't been keeping up with the news enough obviously, but did they pass a law requiring an ATP now? That is great if so but I had only heard rumors of this possibly happening.

They're very short at Munchkin Airlines -- but it's a tough commute.

My understanding is that the bill passed the house but still has to get signed off by congress and then the president. But... I think it is safe to say yes... the bill will pass soon.

Thoose students will dry up real soon. For right now a small supply will build up but at the same time guys are still aging when 65hits American/United/Us Air and some CAL will loose alot then suck up a ton of RJ guys. Regionals will get the remaning CFI and such. All of this happening while less loans and High Mins will deter people from taking up the proffesion in general. I think this will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
