So.... if you're a jumpseater, and you see the CA pull out the iPhone and use it with the inflight wifi.... are you obligated to report them? Or just keep your mouth shut?

I'm not arguing that it should have been covered, I'm arguing that they werent even allowed to file an asap and allow it to go through the process. The FAA has pulled their tickets before thsi ever could have gone through the process. The Media crucified these guys to the point that they didnt have a chance and thus have now completely lost not only their job but their livelihood.

Like i said, i think they got what was coming to them as far as losing their job but the chain of events here is a huge problem. Next time you make a bad decision or do something you could have done better just think that if the media knew about it that they could destroy your career just to make a story. All of the protections you thought you had wouldnt mean a thing because evidently the media can get the FAA and the company to completely ignore the established process.

Some of you must be joking. Seriously.... they would normally start their decent 100 miles out and they flew past the airport 150 miles. That is 250 miles of total disregard for the safety of the operation. Their heads should be on the chopping block and they should lose their jobs and certificates. I don't care if they flew the concord or Airforce 1 and have 50k hours. This is a screw up that can't be overlooked. I am not gonna back these guys because they portray a bad image for all pilots.

I think it should too. There is no problem finding two competent people to replace them either.

They're toast.

Almost certain an ALJ will uphold their revocations as this was eggregious disregard and WELL within the confines of "careless and reckless" operation of an aircraft.

ALPA will seek arbitration defending their almost certain termination from Delta (NWA). 99% chance they'll fail to get their jobs back. Unlike the drunks of the past, this was not an "illness" and it'd actually be better if they fell asleep as they could argue some type of medical issue or fatigue. This was just flat out disregard and jeopardized the safety of everyone on board.

An arbitrator will have no problem upholding Delta's dispatching of these pilots to other professions. Perhaps they're fine guys and they just used terrible judgement, but revocation and termination are totally appropriate for a blunder of this magnitude. Technically they were sitting in the cockpit, but they were no more involved in operating the aircraft then the businessman taking a dump in the aft lav.

When I read stuff like this makes me think I will not worry about allowing jumpseaters anymore.

I did not say that I have never engaged in questionable activity on the flight deck, I have just never allowed myself to be so engrossed in it that I did not look at the instrument panel for 78 mins!

I don't give a $hit what airline they fly for, they should not be flying! For god sakes if the FA's hadn't called they could have very easily run out of gas!

Tell me how you defend their behavior?

"Experience" is nothing but knowledge gained from mistakes.

No one is beyond redemption, and America has a culture of allowing second chances. Anyone who's read "Flying Drunk" by Joe Balzer would know this. Here's a pilot who was arrested for flying drunk, then put in jail for a year. Surely this was far, far more serious than the NWA pilots infraction.

Yet Kittyhawk and American both saw something of value and offered him a second chance.

Sanctions and punishment may be in order. But to ban them from ever flying again? I certainly hope not.

The media should not be prosecuting these pilots. I hate the media. hate hate hate. They should be put on leave by the company. They should be allowed to file an ASAP. Whether or not the ASAP is accepted is another question. Due process has not been afforded to these pilots. The court of public opinion in the media has no place in my contract, delta policy manual, SOP, FOM, or whatever else you want to call it. If the USAir pilot who discharged his weapon in the cockpit can get his job back then so can these guys. Even the NWA pilot who got busted years ago for drinking eventually got his job back. I think he was the source for this joke: How many NW pilots does it take to fly a jet? 2 and a 1/5. By the way, inflight wifi is fast....and of course I was deadheading when I used it....thats my story and I'm sticking to it.
