This is a nice sentiment, but naive. Once you get you get some hours in different aircraft, you'll see it's pretty much the same. Cruise=Auto pilot. No need to hand fly.
Aside: I'm pretty sure that your other pilot would be a little concerned that you feel that you can do better than the autopilot.
