If they call you for a 10:00 2-day trip on your days off, it will be paid @ 20:00hrs

Does that happen often? Like, for a new hire that would be struggling during his first year with an unhappy wife and child at home.

Not too often. I had a couple such opportunities but my wife and kids go through enough with me gone half the month. As a commuter, I wasn't too motivated to leave them even more on off days that would link up to a long stretch of on days for double first year pay ($77/hr). To each their own.

I got called twice this month but they always seem to call when I'm backing out of my driveway on the way to the beach house

I have flown 6hrs since June 25th. I'm really not motivated to do anything in the summer. I look forward to busting my ass and hoping for more JA in qtr 4 when we get a lot of deliveries

I've been called for one JA that I accepted, one I turned down and another where the scheduler said, and I quote "we're not that desperate yet to give you JA and pay protect you for the trip we'd have to take you off of". I just couldn't luck out on that little gem.

Just to ease any confusion, Junior Assignment is kind of a misnomer. There is no "you have to accept this trip" stuff.
