That's literally the first time I've ever heard anyone challenge that "theory".
Also, there are significantly harder degrees. Many engineering schools have insanely hard tests where upper echelon SAT types get 20, maybe 30% right. The results are then graded on the curve, with the median being a C. Other classes more aligned with other majors even at the same college could see almost all A's and B's for everyone.
This shouldn't devolve into a "my school can beat up your school" or whatever. But some schools and some majors are significantly harder relative to a given GPA and that is an iron clad indisputable fact that I've never heard anyone even attempt to challenge before.

But, small data set, could be wrong.

So true. I went from a 4.0 at my junior college, heavy on math and science classes, to a 2.9 at my 4 year engineering school (one of the top in the country). We would routinely get exams where the highest score was 40% correct. Then the mean was taken. In a room full of geniuses the average grade was a C. Now I can't get a call from Delta because I didn't major in art history.

All of the AA new hires I know are better than 3.0 GPA's. But that's also probably because they needed high GPA's to compete for military pilot slots and/or hired by their reserve units in the first place. These days its equally hard to be hired by a guard or reserve unit without a high GPA.

It's good to be first. I only went to two schools and only taught at one, so my scope is somewhat limited. But what I see is that folks with high GPAs in any major are smart and hardworking. And folks with low GPAs, in any major, not as much.
But, small data set, could be wrong.

FWIW I think its absolutely fair to "grill" someone at an interview about a lower GPA. And its not that some people will have "excuses" but rather there are likely many cases where further inquiry would lead to a more approproate decision being made than just excluding someone based largely on that one metric.

I agree there is definately a general broad based correlation. All things equal, higher GPA usually does reflect harder work, more smarts, the future ability to fly the crap out of an ILS or whatever. But there is more to it than just that. I'm glad DL recognizes and values hard work in college as well as life in general. I just hope they aren't too myopic about that one thing to the point of excluding some otherwise exceptional candidates.

For the low GPA guys, I have two engineering degrees from name schools with decent GPAs and have heard exactly zip. Take heart, whatever the secret is--it ain't having a 3.0+ GPA. And I agree with you, judging someone's ability based on college GPA a decade or more after the fact seems utterly nonsensical to me.
