Allegiant is a great comparable airline to Spirit in terms of the business model (both frankly stole 50% of it from defunct Skybus), similar business model, similar fleet plans, etc.. IBT. ALPA wasn't accepting new airlines and we were afraid of being assessed for the TWA lawsuit that was going on at the time. Also, just to point something out, we didn't take anything from Skybus. We were already alive and kicking with our business model when Skybus started and shortly fizzled out. Thanks for posting Spirit's highlights, NedsKid. You guys had to strike for it and I fear we will as well.

Insecurity about the TWA assessment was/is a valid concern. I have a feeling that was an issue (along with the bond rate change) that is driving a LOT of this winter's early retirements.

It would be GREAT not to be an ALPA member when that assessment comes down.

Another nice thing is that IBT is not charging any dues until our contract is signed (no back dues either once that happens).

While shooting for the spirit contract is better than nothing it's a bit of a lowball in my mind. It's a good contract but needs much improvement and everyone else has come up a bunch since it was ratified. Alligiant pilots should be shooting for being the best md80 airbus and 757 pilots out there. The goal is best paid airline pilot not best paid ULCC pilot. Win you win, we all win.

God knows the company makes enough money to afford it... Arbitrators will see that.

You'd be surprised what arbitrators can see and what they'll do. Ask any AS pilot how their last arbitration went.

Agreed. We were early to go through negotiations, and our result was very good . . . for the time. Most of our peers were struggling, furloughing, and/or in preparations for a run through Ch. 11. It was a horrible time to go for a contract, and we got what we got.

Since then, our peers have come out of Ch. 11, are profitable, and the consolidation of Delta/Northwest, Southwest/AirTran, United/Continental, and American/US Airways have changed the landscape, for the positive. Lets not try to replicate an old contract, like Spirit's, but rather a new one, so that we, at Spirit, will not have to hear our management tell us we need a 'cost neutral' contract to compete effectively with Allegiant when we get another bite at the apple.

You've got that right. Its amazing how many pilots are Faux News fans. Pilots are just blue collar labor...a cost to be minimized. Forget that at your peril.
