Toomanyrjs doesn't work for Frontier, so please save your petty remarks about F9.

The regionals have been doing similar flying as the majors, but there is a huge disparity in the quality of pilots. Mainline pilots are carefully vetted and have tremendous experience, whereas regionals will hire any one with a pulse and an ATP. The ATP was even optional until 6 months ago.
I love to hate this guy. He's a flame baiting troll...but unfortunately what he's saying is becoming a reality at the regionals. I've been here (RAH) for almost 8 years. Some of the guys and gals we're putting through training shouldn't be here. I absolutely loathe what our profession and this company have become:-(

That's TOTD material right there. Frontier a bigger regional at best? What a dumb statement. What toomanyrjs wrote is true:

"The regionals have been doing similar flying as the majors, but there is a huge disparity in the quality of pilots."
Yes, true. Regionals are typically the entry-level job and have usually lower time/experienced pilots than their major/legacy/LCC counterparts.

Mainline pilots are carefully vetted and have tremendous experience, whereas regionals will hire any one with a pulse and an ATP. The ATP was even optional until 6 months ago. "
Again, true. The proof is in abundance. Anyone with the minimums and fog a mirror has a good chance at the regionals. The majors is where the experience level is higher in the average applicant, for many reasons, one being it's usually not an entry-level job at that point. It is far easier to get hired at Endeavor, Silver, Envoy than it is to get hired at Delta/American/United.

But has it always been that way? Speaking with a grey hair ex PAA guy down in MIA after 9/11, one of the tales he spun was that one or two times in his past during hiring spurts the Elephants were all scrapping to hire pilots. It got to a point that they were taking peeps with "...500-700hrs and no college. Heck, I don't have a degree and they took me!!" he said. He might have been fibbing a bit, but you get the point.

The hiring now a days going on at the regional level is reflecting that past. But hiring at the Legacy level still has a wealth of applicants so the requirements that have been place there still hold.

To put it in simplistic terms, "it's a supply and demand thing"

At one point in my career, I had an interview at Delta...and nowhere else. None of the regional/commuters would even interview me.

Pretty soon we will be back to the 1960s, when UAL hired HS students with a private license and paid for their all of their training...they got UAL numbers as soon as they were hired out of High School.

Ok, does "Frontier - the international power house," sound better? Not trying to bruise any egos but jeez, I flew to more international destinations when I flew the CRJ900 for endeavor, than frontier does combined, and yes I consider most LCC carriers "big regionals".

Shy, agree, regional standards are lower than majors, and they were the lowest when they were hiring 250 hour guys such as yourself.

So you judge whether an airline is a regional or major by it's number of international destinations?!?! Does that make Southwest a regional airline? - Are you new?

Let me educate you. Frontier flys narrowbodies into and out of their own markets. Regionals provide fee for departure feed to major airlines' hubs using turbo props and RJ's. They service the Mainline's markets not their own. Both of which, by the way are real airplanes that require real skill set.

Back on topic….so they are considering doing this just to save $22M/yr? What's that, like 1/10th of the cost of one of those new 777s? Sounds like a good financial plan….to get through the week, anyway.

The nickel and dime bandaid approach to finances in this industry is ridiculous.
