Default US cancels TLV, DL 747 diverts to CDG

Things are really coming to a head over there. Rockets within 2-3 miles of the airport.

Delta Flight 468, a Boeing 747 with 273 passengers and 17 crew members, diverted to Paris on Tuesday after reports of a rocket near Tel Aviv, the airline said.

US Airways also canceled a flight to Israel Tuesday. Flight 796, which began in Los Angeles, was canceled in Philadelphia before leaving for Tel Aviv.

United Airlines canceled flights 84 and 90 from Newark to Tel Aviv.

That's a good call. This week has been pretty active with the foreign affairs. It's going to be interesting to see if any lasting actions arise from all these events.

I wouldn't say they "elected" to cancel the flights as much as the FAA has put a temporary restriction on conducting passenger flights there.

They made the decision before the FAA put the restriction out.

Delta's diversion kicked everything off.

After Malaysian 17s tragic result, no airliner should fly over a war zone. Israel would be one.

How many flights a day do you think go over Iraq? Huge number to and from the gulf including a lot of EY and EK.

Interesting how all of the "experts" on cable news that say they would have banned flights over Ukraine have never mentioned the flights over Iraq (or Afghanistan for that matter!)

I would wager airlines are now operating under that premise, that all war zones are no fly zones.

No, actually United and Delta "elected" to suspend their service to Tel Aviv in-definently, outside of the FAA grounding.

There's a difference. No US passenger airliner is landing in Iraq. Whereas in Israel there are several USA airliners that land at Ben Gurion Tel Aviv airport that have to make an approach for landing. With all the rocket fire going on, one could hit a landing airliner. Unlike El Al, American jetliners don't have rocket countermeasures dealing with MANPADs or Stingers.
