I know it doesn't seem like it right now, but there is a very high demand for mil pilots, and they are being hired at rates unseen in many years. Right now there is a glut of them who are applying. When you meet them or hear them online "had my app out for nine months and nothing" you think that hiring isn't happening. How many mil guys have Delta, Southwest, and United hired in the last year? Answer: a lot.
It is happening guys. Pretty soon that backlog is going to be cleared out and then you are going to see lower time guys getting snatched up. With uncle tying active duty guys up for 10 years or more, where are those guys going to come from?

If you are considering getting out:
Get your licenses
Build your resume and professional contacts
Do an interview prep course

Luck favors the prepared. I had my apps out for almost a year before I heard a peep, but when the time came, I was ready.
I was the first hire in my group of friends...a year and a half ago. Since then I personally know at least 15 who have been hired at legacies. I know many, at least 25, who are holding their cards close and will punch as soon as they get a call.

Shack.

If you're a mil guy reading this, and think you're just going to drop an application three months prior to separation and mosey on into your new airline gig, prepare to be painfully disappointed.

Quick question for those in the know... do R-ATPs AUTOMATICALLY become ATPs when the 1500 hr mark is reached? There are some helo guys in my unit that are hoping so.
If my memory serves me, when I went to the FSDO to submit my MEI / military IP eqivalancy paperwork, the grumpy guy noticed the "restricted", and he removed it and ordered me up a new certificate. So it did take positive action, unbeknownst to me, on my part.

How early is too early to get applications posted? I can imagine you hurt your chances if you get selected for an interview but you say, "Can you wait 2 years until I start terminal?"

Just put your terminal leave date as your availability date.

A lot of mil guys don't really have a "plan" to leave. If the next assignment offered is a good deal they might stay, if the next assignment offered sucks they might bail.

I was remote in Korea and had a couple of unfilled jobs in my office. Every time I got notification that they'd given a guy the job, a few days later I'd get a notification that the dude dropped his papers. One remote billet probably kicked 4 dudes out of the USAF before a guy finally showed up.

SPOT ON! This is how I answered my "Tell me about your most difficult obstacle to overcome" and I answered with telling them I thought as an AF guy with over 4k hrs airlines would be crawling over each other to hire me. I was quickly humbled as I started learning the intricacies of the process. I chuckle every time a Capt rushes my guard unit with the same bit of naiveness I had a couple yrs ago.

I took the day I knew I would be separating, and moved it left by however much terminal leave I would have. i.e. If you have 90 days of leave on the books, and your separation date is Dec 31 you could be sitting in new hire class 90 days prior. Obviously that's the over simplified answer but you get the point.

It's never too early to apply. I had my applications in with DAL, FedEx, etc three years out. The airlines aren't new to the military process, they'll manage when they call you in for the interview based on the date of availability you give them... but be 100% honest. Don't try and play games. Feel free to PM, and auto is for sissies.

Default Add 1 to the count

Just received my approved TERA retirement orders today, so add one more to the counter. (Ok, that's assuming I get an air line job)

Giddy up!

I took crap for an entire workup because I resisted the change... First 30 or so were abysmal, but I eventually acquired a taste for that flavor of kool-aid.
