You said in another thread you are 19 and working on the instrument rating. Keep that up, and pursue the commercial next. You'll have to get at least an ATP and depending on which route you go, it'll require 800-1500 hrs. Don't focus too early on a legacy. If you go the civilian route you will most likely have to work at a regional airline first. That wil give a taste if domestic flying. Most domestic flying at any airline is typically 1-4 day trips. If you are junior then yes you probably will miss Christmas or Thanksgivings. It all depends in your seniority in base on type. As for the family life question, are you married already? You're really young and there is plenty of time for starting a family later. IMO, finish your flight certs/ratings, get flight instructing or find a way to build time, and get an ATP for the regionals. The pay is low and I wouldn't recommend trying to start a family at the stage you're at right now.
And FYI I have been flying one day trips so I'm home at night. 8 hour out and backs make for about 10 days of work a month! Living in base in my opinion is the only way to stay sane and make it work. I see my husband and kid A LOT! I also was raised by two parents who fly!

Alright to the Op and friends, let me give you some advice.
1. Don't take advice from airline pilots.
2. Never ever listen to a non airline pilot tell you what it's like to be an airline pilot. Ever.
3. There's always someone who has done it faster, sooner, and better then you will ever do it; so how about just enjoy your ride?
4. Pack underwear. It sucks when you screw that up on a four day.
5. Cooperate and graduate. Nobody cares what you have to say.
6. The common denominator between you and your three divorces is you.
7. Be nice, you never know if that person you dislike is your key to you getting hired. Once hired, screw them.
8. What you bid is nobody's damn business.
9. You're nothing special and the less you talk the smarter you'll seem. So if youre dumb, be quiet.
10. It's all about the landings.
