More jetBlue:

Once assigned a trip, you are effectively treated as a line holder for the days of that trip, which includes for pay purposes. For exampe, if they reassign you to a flight that gets you done later than your original pairing footprint, you are paid the same overages as a regular line pilot (which here is minimum of 5 hrs at premium and JA rates, all paid over guarantee). This is nice in that if you are assigned a 2-day trip that finishes early, you know that they cannot keep extending your trip, without paying you serious money.

In addition to Sulkair's post, at Frontier, if you are awarded a trip through aggressive reserve bidding, you are released until your showtime for that trip. Ex. If you have a 4 am reserve period and you are awarded a trip with a 1pm show, you are not required to be contactable until your new showtime!

More JB: The fine print.

**These aforementioned rules do not apply during, IROPS or company induced short staffing events. When chaos ensues we shut the airline down and reboot so our airplanes and crews can rest.

Living 3 hours from BOS, would it be easy to "partially" drive, say within an hour of the airport when on reserve? What are the durations of the reserve days? Thanks

I love at the 2 hour mark west of BOS, during rush hour times I drive a bit closer, sit at a coffee shop and wait until traffic dies down. It can get grueling at times.....BUT I don't commute, and from what I understand, my "grueling times" aren't that bad. If there is something I need to get done while on reserve, I will call Crew Services and explain what I would like to do and see if there is anything they will use me for....and I roll the dice based on that info.
I also haven't flown much. Had to buy trips for currency. My QOL is wonderful.
My only hope (which I'm not holding breath for) is after the CBA the SCR timing goes from 2 to 3 hours.

Thanks for that info, and what is the reserve day duration? (And is the start time flexible?) I'm guessing 8 hours?

its a 10 hour window each reserve day. As a reserve pilot, you can bid AM or PM….I have had mixed luck with it. But I tell you this, living w/in 3 hours of BOS is wayyyyyy better than commuting 6+ hours to a base.

Should add at Spirit the same applies... Once you are assigned a trip you have all the rights of a lineholder... They cannot reassign you and a lineholder cannot poach your trip...

Until the MEC grants the company contractual relief in an operational meltdown and none of these rules apply...ha

That's gonna suck big time if you start on call at 3AM. Means you'll have to leave home at 2AM just to be within range if they call you at 3AM. You could do this 6 days in a row and not get called once, but you'll spend a lot of time and gas driving all over, just so you don't get burned by an exactly 2 hour call out.

I flew with someone who lives right at 2 hours from base and just by hearing it described to me, it sounded stressful, and he didn't even have to drive closer.

Everyone's situation is different and I realize packing up and moving is probably not an option, but in my opinion your idea seems just as stressful as a traditional commute.
