You can also go on wage works on Delta perks and sign up for pre-tax funds that go straight to a credit card every month that you can only use at public transportation vendors. I used it to buy my metro cards, UT frontrunner, NJ transit, and LIRR tickets.

Also as you board/deplane your commuter flight...ask other deadhead pilots and FAs if they are going to Kew Gardens. I shared many a 12 dollar cab ride with 1 or 2 others. Catch is that when you call the cab you need to tell him you have x riders to ensure you can all split the 12 fee otherwise they will charge each of you if you do it on the fly at the curb. Then some will also charge you more if you want more than one location for drop off. Just clarify the conditions as you get into the cab.

There are also several shortcuts to get in and out of the airports especially JFK. Can't really put them into text but ask around and follow the seasoned commuters. I cut 5-10 minutes off my walk to the airtrain at JFK when someone showed me the elevator to the arrival hall and the exit area near the TSA screening area. I hate terminal 4 and I don't miss my crash pad. good luck.

As I get old and grumpy I really can't stand waiting 20-30 minutes for Kew Cab to show up when I commute in at night for the morning show. I just want to get to the pad and get some sleep.

I've started using Lyft and UberX... it's a little more than doing a solo Kew Cab but not bad.

Lyft has been $17-22 between , UberX $20. This is all inclusive (Kew is $12 to the crashpad, but then after tip it's 14-15....

Best part is you can see where the cars are before you click on getting one... I've never waited more than 5 minutes.

Warning, if you go the Uber route, don't use regular Uber, that'll be $30-40 (although you'll get a much nicer ride in a Benz or something similar...)

Morning time the Q-Runner works great.

  • UberX: The least expensive Uber service. Drivers use their own everyday cars to give you a ride. Seats 4 riders.
  • UberXL: Seats at least 6 passengers. An UberXL car will be an SUV or a MiniVan. Higher fare price than UberX
  • UberPlus: Also for groups of 5-7 riders, but the vehicle standards and fares are higher.
  • Black Car: Uber’s ‘executive’ luxury service. Your driver will be a licensed livery driver and pick you up in a luxury sedan or SUV. Higher fare price than UberPlus

I did 4 months in a crash pad before converting to SLC. Most run around 250 a month in Kew Gardens. We had a mix from our indoc--6 of us were in the same crash pad and 2 eventually found a better place for their situations (ie closer to LGA since they were mainly flying out of there). A few others did the by night places. Our place had 2 bunks per room and about 70% of the time I had the room to myself. I typically commuted in the night before on one of the direct flights from SLC and commuted home the day of after 1200. Once I held a line (last 2 months) I traded trips so that I could occasionally commute in the same day. 320 Charters worked great for me since they usually start in the late evening and end in early mornings so that I could commute on both ends. Lots of factors to consider--cost, flying sched, convenience, amount/quality of sleep. I bid 7-10 days on reserve and many times I went home or went to see other family/friends when you get your 30 hours off every 6 days. If you're holding a line, it is probably cheaper to do the nightly option if you can find a reliable/convenient place. I volunteered to fly anything on reserve since making 2 an hour on per diem was better than hanging out in old house in kew gardens but I also took the time to catch a few baseball games, the tennis open championships, and tour the city enjoying some great food. Bottomline--commuting sucks.
