Rumor has it that "DEPENDS" will be standard uniform issue to prevent such events in the future.

You sound as if Captains are inherently better pilots than FOs. Does getting hired first make them better pilots? Nope. Some pilots are good and some not so much, and it has very little to do with the date they got hired.
