Divide by 1.15 and that's the conversion to hours. Even then it's an apples to oranges comparison. The SWA system is waaaaaaay different than other airlines. Some things better, some things worse.

At spirit we accrue 4hrs per month bankable up to 400 I think. It can be used for yourself or to take care of a loved one. You can go negative in your bank by 25 hrs. If you separate from the company and have a negative balance it comes out of you last check. If you have a positive balance when you retire (not resign) it's paid at a percentage of your pay rate when you retire based on longevity. I think the highest is 50% for 15+ish years of service. I'd have to verify those numbers for accuracy.

I hope we see a large increase in accrual because 4hrs is quite inadequate.

We also don't have any verification language but I have heard of pilots getting quick calls from the chief pilot if they called in sick within 2hrs of show, even if it was a reserve period with no trips awarded yet.

You don't need to do the conversion: SWA accumulates sick at 10% of what you work.

You work 100 units of pay, you get 10 units of sick. Units=units.

I've never heard of SWA asking pilots for verification of sick from a Dr. However, any month that you use any amount of sick, you lose "points" that can be applied to buy passes buddy passes. So basically you're awarded buddy passes each month that you don't call in sick.

BTW, our management tells us that we call in sick more than other airlines. It would be interesting to know which airline is the "sickest". I always assumed it was AA based on what the guys there tell me!

Our system was made for age 60. If you retired at 60 with a large sick bank, the company would pay your medical insurance until age 65. Now that you can work until 65, no incentive to retire with a large sick balance. No surprise, guys are using it to improve their schedules as there's no buy-back when you retire.

Does that amount carry over into future years if unused? Or is it a use it or lose it system like Delta?

Each pilot will accrue one (1.0) TFP of sick leave credit for each ten (10.0) TFP cumulative up to a maximum of one thousand six hundred (1,600) TFP of sick leave credit.

Upon retirement, sick leave may be traded for continued medical coverage under any coverage option of the flexible benefits portion of the health plan, including optional dental, at the rate of one (1) month coverage for each ten (10.0) TFP accrued or until federal Medicare eligibility age as defined in Section 14, Insurance and Loss of License, whichever occurs first.

We're (Delta) by far the 'sickest'. Have you seen some of our MadDog drivers? They're disgusting.

Actually at SW it's 10% of what you are PAID each month, not what you WORK (even better). So a good vacation week with the attached drops will pay 45 TFP, and you'll actually still get 4.5 TFP accrued for that. It's the best sick accrual by far out of any airline I've worked for.

At a regional I called in sick a lot more because the schedule was grueling. Don't your MDs fly regional like pairings?

Have you ever seen some alligator wrestlers? They're disgusting too, and for the same reason.

I've only worked at 4 different carriers. But each one said at one time or another that "our pilots use the most sick time of the industry"

And none of those 4 are SW.
