It's a DC 9 rating BTW...
A type rating won't help you get an airline job. It used to help with SWA which is why I did it a few yrs ago. Not a wise use of $ IMHO.

I think all the "type doesn't help" talk is just trying to prove a negative - can't be done. Who knows what goes into the calculation of worthiness? It can't hurt.

I got mine at CPT and had a fantastic experience. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. And I already had a type rating from the USAF, but it had been over 10 years and I wanted to show I was still trainable. I wasn't asked about it in my UAL interview.

When I hemmed and hawed about getting it, one of my friends looked at me and just asked "Do you want the job or not?" Easy answer, easy decision. Chance of a lifetime, why would I not try to check every box I possibly could? If nothing else it shows how bad you want it.

Thanks for the advice. It might be a waste of $ but I am attending CPT later this year. I have been flying the same turboprop for 11years and I need to get back into learning large amounts of information in a short amount of time.

Stay away from the 80...great jet, easy to fly, but a PITA to learn.

Regional airlines provide pay during a course learning to fly a jet you will get a type rating in....they also generally cover the cost of the hotel. Passing a 121 training course will be a lot more useful to get hired at a Major than buying a type rating.

If I were you I'd suck it up and do 6 months at a regional

I'd get the 737 type..lots of options on places to work and they're still making them. the DC-9 is on its last legs

Why not go find a job flying corporate? Get paid 50-70k get a type rating in a jet and then see what opens up. Just a thought.

What rock are you hiding under?

And OP...I personally wouldn't waste the time and expense on a type rating anymore. If you wish to, the 737 would be more beneficial than the 80.

Great training, very fast (8 days: 1 day ground school, 7 sims). You have to complete some CBT before you arrive, but it was very well organized. $7300.

HPA used to be the place to go. But they were bought by ALL ATPs Flight Training Academy and now they only offer the 737NG for $12,500 ("scheduling issues" is what they told me as to why the classic is no longer available).

A type may not be necessary anymore, but it certainly cannot hurt! Especially if you have not been through major training (new hire, upgrade, completely different type) in a long time.
