Virgin [VX] Hiring Pool Updates (2015)
#21
Ok, so let's just be conservative and say 50 have been hired so far, assuming 12 are in the pool, that makes 62. With ten airplanes coming online between Sept and June/July of next year and assuming they hire 100 pilots to cover said aircraft, they'll still have to hire 38 more people based on the numbers above (which are likely over estimations nor do they consider attrition nor any unannounced growth). So realistically, VA will have to hire 60-80 more pilots above any beyond what is already in the pool to cover for 2016. Based on the fleet plan alone, hiring should pick back up in 4Q 2015 and 1Q 2016. We shall see!

According to our top dog, we are done hiring for the year. If I were a poolie I'd continue to pump out applications to every other airline and go with the first one to offer you a class.

Anyway, Cush is gonna say what needs to be said to get the stock up and make the investors happy. That's what he's suppose to do. As long as CSS covers the flying then the bean counters make it look great. I'm assuming classes will start in the fall as their not allowing any early sims (pc/pt).

Interesting comments by Cush that must be taken at face value. With the lack of attrition and the trickling on of the 10 airplanes between Sept 2015 and June 2016 a typical "hiring rush" experienced by other carriers doesn't seem to be the story at VA. They'll undoubtedly have to hire in 2016, the question is when, and does HR take a pro active approach and set up a pool the Fall/4Q for 2016 new hires as they've done now. I think it is fair to assume that if you are in the pool now, the chances of you getting a 2015 class are strong...but we all know where assuming gets us.
I think it is humorous that after 8 years in operation, absolutely nobody knows what makes HR/pilot hiring tick. They are great at keeping secrets!

Kidding aside, lets be real here about numbers. Not sure where the 100 newhire FO number is from. We staff ~6 crews per plane so 10 new planes should be 60 newhire FOs. It should also be 60 new CAs and we've already upgraded 8 so between now and end of 2016 we "should" have 52 more upgrades.
Bottom line right now is guys are tripping over themselves picking up opentime at 150% and flights are going out just fine. So in many ways we are staffed properly at 640 pilots for 53 planes. And as management already said in the investor call, attrition is far lower than expected. I can't even remember the last time someone left since the one CA "went" back to AA. Our attrition is basically zilch.
