I would venture to say that VA changed that whole landscape and lie flats and Mint would not be offered on those routes without VAs influence. United stumbled over themselves to try and squeeze VA out of Newark-West Coast by tripling their daily schedule and it didnt work....at all. So there is no doubt that VA is viewed as a serious competitor in the lucrative transcon market.
I think time will show that VA will do very well on the Hawaii routes. They are money makers and yield on them are close to, if not better than, the transcon NY-West Coast market. Stage length is dang near the same as 75% of VAs flying now so thats not really a big deal. I would like to see VA start adding cargo to/from Hawaii. That would make more than $25 bucks a bag!
Anyways.....VA is not a viable contender across the board for the big 3 but they are on those lucrative transcon and I think they will be on the Hawaiian flying as well.
If a VA/JB merger ever happens that will be disruptive and will be a threat to the big 3. I dont think it will happen but it would be the most harmonious....as would Spirit/Frontier.

Just a thought, but mergers seem to be more about 'routes' than similar product type. I guess I could see the F9/NKS merger because there is only an approximate 10% overlap. What I don't see is a B6/VX merger because of the fact that JetBlue is already every where Virgin is and is responding with a similar product. At this point JetBlue would just be spending more money on a merger than just purchasing 60 a/c. Virgin has a few things that may or may not be worth the expense of a merger, such as the DC and LGA slots, however again, Jblu is already there.

As for the 2 gates at DAL (with no room for expansion), I wouldn't think that would matter much, followed up with the over saturated HI route. Those 2 places may work well for Virgin, but wouldn't do much or enough for the rest of us to warrant the expense of a merger.

Just my .02 and definitely not worth much. Personally, I think Franke is pimping the merger rhetoric pre-F9 IPO to make more money for himself by creating speculation. Surely something will happen, because that's what money guys do, they make more money and the rest of us pay the price.

Cheers and lots of luck creating airlines😜

I think the DOT looks at DCA/LGA slots during a sale or merger and will typically put them up for re-bidding (Airways & AMR comes to mind).

I think you're spot on with Franke's pimping the merger speculation to boost the valuation. Indigo just installed a Barclay's IPO specialist on the board of directors for a reason!

On the transcon markets, which is the majority of VX flying, I'd say yes. All the improvements you see today on the transcon market was fueled because of VX's flying since 2007.

And we are rooting for you (and jetBlue) in contract negotiations. We are ALPA now too and will be following in similar footsteps.

Agreed.....and it's still fueling the transcon market.
