Southwest Hiring Info 2016

I posted a few graphs the union put out in Sept/Oct timeframe confirming the approximate 40/40/20 civ, mil, combo numbers. They haven't put out any new demographics since then but I would guess they're similar. Civilians have come from a variety of backgrounds from other majors, overseas heavy drivers, corporate, charter, fractional, and regionals.

Our class was nearly 50/50 out of 26 total. 8 did not have the type.
We had about 14 military. 3 or 4 had some 121 time at the regionals, and one had corporate time. We had guys from all branches and varieties from recon to tactical to tankers and helo gunships.
No females in our class, but a few in the classes behind us.
I think we had 12 civilian only. Of those, about 5 were Skywest, 2 corporate and 5 from other 121 carriers like Allegiant, Sun Country, Southern, etc.
Average total time was just over 7000 hours.

When I interviewed in my group of 8 I was the only civilian and the only one with a type. I also have time in type. I didn't fo to a job fair not sure of the others but I doubt it.
BTW in my group several already had job offers from 1or 2 of the big 3 and most had other interviews at these companies coming up.
The only thing said in the interview that all of us had in common was that we had said we could start before July 1,2016. They need to hire and have in class 450+ by then. 616 confirmed number to be hired in 2016. Said they can revise that hire but for now that's the number.

Two just left class in the last week for other airlines. Make your own assumptions. SWA is a career destination, but it isn't the only show in town anymore. I don't think that the company has fully wrapped their brains around that fact yet.

That's an interesting piece of info. Did you hear it from a reliable source? Or crew room scuttlebutt?
Swapa seems to firing on all cylinders this week if you go by their Facebook and Twitter feeds. If I were an applicant, I would be watching that situation unfold as well.

Guy in class right now told me when it happened. I would consider it reliable. Checks with the seniority list being a few numbers short for the December classes.
I agree that I am very happy with the tack that swapa has taken. I am interested to see the results. I read an article today where Gary Kelly reaffirms his mission to keep costs low to compete with the ULCCs. I doubt that release was coincidental.

Our class had several with other options out there but nobody wanted to bail.
SWA isn't for everyone...and either are the Legacies. That being said, I think we are being hired at a good time everywhere.

I posted this over in the old thread...but not sure if that one is dead/dying....?
Anyway, when the type rating requirement went away was there any kind of advanced notice?
Just wondering if the 1000 TPIC requirement were ever to go away if there might be any kind of heads up? Or if it might just go away one day?
I know a lot of people don't seem to think it will go away any time soon, but if the other majors are getting rid of it, why wouldn't SWA?

I wouldn't speculate that two leaving is a big deal...from what I hear some of the legacy carriers are taking their time getting candidates a class date compared to SWA.
Our class had several with other options out there but nobody wanted to bail.

I agree that two isn't a big deal. It does concern me, however, that even in our latest TA, first year pay was flat and we don't offer much in the way to offset that. No paid parking or uniforms, no crew meals on long legs, insurance premiums are way up, and many of our first year guys won't be able to afford the 10 percent of their meager pay required to get the full 401k match.
I would like to see this addressed before the two guys turns into 10 guys.
We do a lot for our probies to welcome them into the fold, but we are falling way behind when it comes to pay.

I think SW did themselves a disservice by getting rid of the type. At least with the type requirement they got people who wanted to work there. Now it is a "safety school" till XYZ calls. I know two guys personally in the pipeline that only went there while they are waiting on Mother Delta to call. I would imagine once they start having enough folks leave in less that a year after paying to train them, they may see the error of their ways.
