Default Tricare Supplemental - good/bad/ugly

MANY years ago, I had my family on MOAA's Tricare Supplemental, but haven't kept up with what's the good/bad/ugly on it. Have stayed on Prime after retiring, but am looking at switching from Prime to Tricare Standard.

Delta's Tricare supplement seems to be a bad deal unless you expect to max out, and even then... Any current users have any advice or lessons learned? I seem to remember that MOAA supplement would cover the remaining %, but only if Tricare approved the visit in the first place. I'm not just interested in monthly policy price, but more on what they cover (or not), and difficulty of use. And if you go out of the Tricare network...

Thanks in advance.

I use the MOAA supp and in you are correct, they only pay if TRICARE pays first. The best part of using them though is that they have access to TRICARE's system so except for prescriptions, they know what Tricare paid and they automatically pay the copay, often straight to the provider if a hospital or large medical network, or back to you if a smaller practice. You have to file a claim for prescriptions, but they refund the copay as well, so going to civilian pharmacy is much better than waiting in line at the local hospital.
If you go out of network, they pay what Tricare won't pay up to a certain amount (120% of allowable charges last time I checked).
But in all cases, tricare has to pay something for them to pay, so if you try and get hypnotherapy that isn't covered by tricare, moaa won't pay either.
Based on the fact that you don't have to file a claim for normal TRICARE visits alone, I can't imagine using any other supplement company.
Your right though, Deltas sup company isn't subsidized at all by Delta, they just offer you access through payroll deduct so the last time I compared costs they were higher than MOAA as well. PM if you have any questions about the MOAA sup as I have used it for the last few years with no complaint.

Been using Air Force Association's (AFA) Tricare Supplement for years with Tricare Standard, happy with it. I do have a deductible but forget how much. Sounds like it works the same as MOAA as far as billing and working off of the Tricare EOB.

Default One Opinion

I've been using Tricare Standard for 13 years. The couple of years I had the MOAA supplement, I didn't benefit from it and quit using it. I have only maxed out Standard one year when my wife had multiple surgeries and complications. I still don't use a supplement and don't feel a need for one. Typical family with 2 kids and good health during that time. No major health issues that would require extraordinary care or monitoring. Finally empty nesters (1 still in college) and definitely no need for supplement. We do have a very capable network in our area. Make sure you take a close look at what the supplements pay and when. For my family, they were an expense that we never recouped.
