Airline Pilot Central recently changed the forum policy for the Private Message (PM) feature. Registered users are now required to have 25 public posts before the site Private Message feature is available. The system looks at the number of posts (25), and the aggregate word count of all posts. If a user makes 25 very short posts, the system may raise the threshold for that user to a higher number than 25 posts. Best bet is just keep making the quality posts - just more of them! To fill the gap left by the PM threshold, I've added the ability to use Instant Messaging. The first thing you should know is that IM providers are NOT affiliated with this site. Provide you IM "handle" at your own risk. All the popular IM clients are represented as well as Skype! Add your IM details in the User Control Panel>Edit Profile. Enjoy!
This should answer your question

if I remember correctly, the reason for this minimum is a spam problem in the early days of this board.

The intent is not race to make as many posts as possible so you can PM. The intent of this site is to be a source of information for professional pilots and aspiring pilots. To just post a reply to anything and everything you see to reach the PM threshold is in poor practice and does not contribute to the overall atmosphere of the site.

One problem you may be having is that in addition to the 25 posts, the computer has a word count which may change the threshold per user so it may be 30 posts for some. Another caveat is that the admins of the site have the authority to wave the posts count and move it in either direction and I have seen it go both ways. I have seen users with the ability to PM slightly before the threshold and I have seen it raised if it is obvious that a user is posting for the mere ability to PM.

Hope that information helps. Again, welcome to APC and feel free to learn and contribute constructively!

usmc-sgt is correct. It's not just your post count, it's also your word count.

The reason for this is twofold: (1) to provide quality posts on the forum, not just 3-word posts to meet the minimum quota, and (2) to prevent spammers from quickly racking up posts for them to be able to then PM users with their junk.

Hope this helps-
