Mr. Hickman worked for decades in the press box at Husky Stadium and as an usher at Edmundson Pavilion. He also worked Seahawks games.
Among those posting their condolences on Twitter was UW football coach Steve Sarkisian, men's basketball coach Lorenzo Romar and former UW basketball star Isaiah Thomas.
"Things will be a little different right before we go out on the court not being able to shake the hand of George Hickman," wrote Romar on his Twitter page. "He was one of the most inspirational men that I have ever met."
Mr. Hickman was an American hero, serving as a Tuskegee Airman, the first African-American pilots to fly in World War II. He later worked for Boeing, and was a well-known figure at UW and Seahawks game until his death.
Mr. Hickman raised the 12th Man flag before a Seahawks game last season.
In 2009, he was one of 188 Tuskegee Airman who attended Barack Obama's presidential inauguration. Co-workers at UW contributed more than $2,100 to send Hickman and one of his grandsons to Washington, D.C.
