The pilot of a de Havilland DHC-1 that crashed Sunday in Cherokee National Forest has been identified as a veteran airshow performer, Jim "Fang" Maroney, 59, of Brookfield, Fla.

I fly out of TN44. I get the pucker factor over flying that area, there is just no place to put down, except maybe Lake Fontana.

Yes he was. He flew my Stearman with me a couple of times, once in Minnesota and once at Bozeman. We both were NWA pilots together, close in seniority.

He was number 23 that I have seen killed in the last 37 years. More than 3/4 of them military or airshow guys.

That's exactly why I quit flying acro, too many friends dying when out practicing. Anybody know why he crashed? The way it reads, he was just going from point A to B, not doing any acro.

Default Missed greatly...

Great friend, great aviator, always asked to do the airshow brief because of his detail and planning skills. Deep loss and missed dearly. He said that morning he was only going mid-way to the show because of WX. He continued on....
