Today's results for NWA really cap off a great week. DAL earns $137 million and NWA earns $170 million for the 2nd quarter. In this market - this is flat out incredible. I like this excerpt from the bizwires:
"...Northwest said it would have earned $170 million for the most recent quarter if not for the accounting charge. It also benefited from a $250 million fuel hedging gain. The carrier said it is on track to close its buy-out by Delta Air Lines Inc. during the fourth quarter.
Those two airlines are the only big carriers to report second-quarter operating profits ($137 million for Delta) although analysts expect Southwest Airlines Corp. to report a profit on Thursday..."
Instead of the normal merger of one strong airline trying to drag a weaker one across the finish line, we have the two strongest ones merging.
