Post CAL & UAL - keeping the rumors alive

(from the Associated Press)

Continental Airlines President Jeff Smisek says the carrier will consider merging with United Airlines if the new combination of Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines becomes a profitable hookup.

Smisek said today in an interview in Germany that Continental's focus for now is on its new membership in the Star Alliance, in which its biggest partners are United and Deutsche Lufthansa.

Continental joined the Star Alliance just last week after quitting the SkyTeam group dominated by the merged Delta/Northwest and Air France/KLM. If the Delta/Northwest combination proves too potent, Smisek said in a Bloomberg Television interview, a Continental merger with United might make sense.

"We are watching Delta to see whether Delta outperforms us financially," Smisek said in Frankfurt, where he was marking Continental's new affiliation with Lufthansa. "They've gotten bigger, they've gotten more complex, but they haven't gotten profitable."

Continental broke off merger talks with Chicago-based United in April 2008 after a weak earnings report from United.

Airline industry analyst Hunter Keay said in a report last week that Continental's new ties with United in the Star Alliance put the two airlines one step closer to an outright merger. But Keay said a formal merger would probably not occur until the revenue environment for airlines stabilizes. He predicted a merger occurring as soon as the third quarter of 2010.
"Should airline fundamentals deteriorate, we believe the stronger carrier would likely wait for a bankruptcy scenario to acquire the other," Keay said.

CAL-UA article today

This topic is over a week old and has a thread with 7 pages already.

Old news.

Rember the big "if" in the article. "If" DAL/NWA is financially successful, CAL "may" consider a merger. Not likely!

how so?

Next year will be the year to watch for earning potential. Once the 1 time expenses are finished the true numbers will be seen. Throughout 2009 we've been spending massive amounts of money on merging and we've still been able to add to our cash pile and pay down debt. I expect more mergers are in the future. Hopefully they go as smoothly as ours went and not end in disasters like USAIR. we'll see
