Me too, military guys have all put in alot of time serving our country, and should be able to get good jobs when they decide to leave. Give it a few years and hopefully these good jobs may open up to those of us with no military experience, till then good luck to all of those who have moved to the next level.
Wow, that was my score. Isn't the first time in my life I've been Tail-end Charlie. It seems kind of biased, though; hard to get that score without a veteran's point bump, I think. I had JUST shy of 1500 total, but met the waiver criteria. The rest of my resume was pretty strong (including a master's from Embry-Riddle and NVD and instructor quals), but can't say that it's a fair cutoff for the masses.
Working for the Federal Government in the United States Military where many have been put in harms way to preserve our freedoms is not biased if they receive a measly 5 bonus points while applying for another line of work with the Fed Gov. Pay your dues and good things may happen so you wont have to continue to be the "Tail-end Charlie."
Don't take that the wrong way, guys. I'm just saying that a well qualified person with no military time can only get banged one point from a "perfect" score to be considered. That's all I meant. Believe me, right now I'm relishing the fact that I have those points and ended up with a 99 because of them.
This could potentially be a second significant milestone where I just made the cutoff. When I was enlisted, I WAS the E-5 advancement cutoff my first time up. Not a bad thing at all; trumped a lot of senior guys. Just saying that it's not the first time I've gotten by hanging with one hand on the bottom rung. Not out of laziness or luck or anything.
Maybe one of you all can give me some advice. I'm a Federal Employee who has been hired as an AIA in Homestead, FL. I got my BI back and now I'm waiting for HR to coordinate a release date so I can start class at FLECT. Once I'm done FLECT, I'm looking for a pilot crash pad or some place VERY CHEAP to stay until I can sell my house, then eventually get an apartment so I can get a feel for the area. What do you all recommend? I'm trying to avoid an apartment right now due to the cost of my mortgage.
Also, those who are familar with the Miami/Homestead area, where is the best to live to raise a family that is relatively close to Homestead ARB. Coral Gables? Kendall? I am not familiar with the area at.
Dutch,
Just my .02 on the area...used to commute to Homestead, the area right around the base is a dump, (and still rebuilding from Hurricane Andrew). Kendall, and Tamiami are decent areas for family dwelling. South of base there's nothing...base is located at exits 6 and 5 and exit 1 is interchange for the FL Keys. (assuming you want to live on terra firma not Key Largo - great time for single folks though)
Davie, Ft Lauderdale and Boca Raton while a haul, may be better situation for family/spouse career/education etc...
My advice get down there and get an eyeball out b/f making a decision...the traffic is brutal and I only commuted once a month for drill.
Good Luck at FLETC

Hello, I live 3 hours North of Homestead and can't give you any local advise. However, when I did move to Florida a few years back and needed a "pilot crash pad" I looked for farms or rural areas that rent by the month with no strings attached. I eventually found a place in the sticks with a guy that turned one of his detached garages into a place to rent. He carpeted the place, installed a sink and shower and the mandatory A/C. It was perfect till I found what I wanted. Just a thought in your search.
Question: you were a federal employee and still had to do a BI? Also how long after the BI interview did you get a call that it was finished? My BI interview was over a month and half ago but haven't received any word since then.

Dutch, This is your favorite Texan. How are things? I got your email and will get back to you soon. I would post a request for crash pads in MIA area on the forum for AA. Just a suggestion. There are alot of crash pads in that area. Talk to you soon. I will give you a heads up on FLETC when it gets close. One piece of advice, start running if your not. Also some Tae Bo and/or MMA stuff would also help. (Check out websites on crossfit training) Congrats by the way, on getting all that BI stuff behind you. C-ya....
Hey man, I appreciate the reply. Yeah, I heard the Homestead area isn't that great (which is typical around any base or airport), so I'm willing to drive from a more suitable location. I also checked out the demographics around the area, which confirms what you are saying. Nonetheless, I'll probably do a few trips down to the MIA area and scout out the area before I leave for FLETC. Take care.
