Default New GI Bill

http://www.gibill.va.gov/S22/S22%20Fact%20Sheet.pdf

POTUS just signed the "post 9/11 GI Bill." Won't really take effect until 1 Aug 09.

Some pretty good benefits for many. Check out the details (hopefully there will be a better summary soon)

Might fund your ATP or Type rating?

For some (still TBD by DoD) you will be able to transfer the benefits to spouse & kids (pay for kid's college tuition).

I used the GI Bill for my ratings....but it only paid 60% of all my ratings after my private. But I guess it was better than nothing.

Jim Webb (Dem Senator-VA) pushed this through, but Bush only signed on after the transferability provision was added on. To me, that's the most important part; without reading the fine print yet, I should be able to help fund my children's college tuition in eight years. Glad I got my OEF tours in and put $1,200 toward this 20 years ago! Now I just need to look into how they track said investment/qualification when I need to show proof in 2016/18.

Guess the details aren't out yet, but read some speculation that the transferability requires 10 years of Active Duty. Not a bad deal, but may eliminate a lot of Guard/Reserve Babies from taking full advantage for their kids. Might entice a few to pick up an extra AEF tour to get over the hump if this is true.

Does anyone know if the rumor that AFA Grads and ROTC Scholarship recipients will now be eligible for the GI Bill is true?

I think the requirement to use the benefit within 15 years of separation/retirement still exists.

Quote from the brochure on the VA website "How long am I eligible?
Individuals who serve at least 90 consecutive
days are eligible for 15 years from their last
period of active duty. If service is 30 days or
more and you are released for a service
connected disability, you will be eligible for 15
years. For the latest information please visit our
website at WWW.GIBILL.VA.GOV ."

HH's comment is correct.

This isn't like the Montgomery GI bill where you had to pay into it in order to be eligible. You serve = you're eligible. ROTC and USAFA (who didn't pay into Montgomery GI bill) are now eligible for this benefit. How long you serve(d) determines how much of the benefit you receive and whether or not it will be transferable.

Cool. So you're saying I don't need to set up any payments then? When I first entered Active Duty they started withdrawing $100 from my paycheck every month and I was told I was ineligble for the GI Bill so I immediately had them stop and refund me the money, but you're saying that I shouldn't have to pay anything and as long as I serve 10 years Active Duty my kids will have tuition assistance for the next 15 years? Damn this sounds like a good deal.
