If UPT is not an option, give some thought to the 18X/RPA field while working on your hours/airline career. No, the RPA time does not count for anything. But, as a guard guy, the bumming opportunities are tremendous. It is hours of boredom punctuated by ten minutes of balls to the wall. RPA's are contributing to the fight, just not very glamorous. You don't deploy and the pay is pretty good considering the options. It's not for everyone in the long term, but done right it has a lot of upside, especially for a new guy. Plus you are in a Guard/Res unit that probably has a lot of airline guys in it.

No disrespect to the CSO's out there, but they are dying breed. The same can be said for any aircrew flying real iron on the ramp in Guard/Res. None of us like that fact, especially those of us caught in the middle of it. As our ATAG told us, RPA's are a growth industry in the mil and civ worlds. Not a bad second gig. Anyways, best of luck!

Sounds like things haven't changed over the years. AF Navigators have always been in a "neither fish nor fowl" situation: better off than a non-rated officer, but hitting a "glass ceiling" somewhere in mid-career. A common escape route was the missile field, and perhaps UAVs will be another one.
