Default Interesting video of A-6 barrier landing

Im a civvy pilot with an interest in Naval Aviation (call me a geek).

I stumbled across a video link of an A-6 taking the barrier back in the eighties. The LSO was "Bug" and the pilot was "Atlas" McNally.

I found it very interesting and have nothing but respect for Navy pilots doing what they do.

I understand that Bug was killed in an A-4 accident but does anyone know what became of Atlas?

Bug died the month I showed up to Miramar, so I never met him, but got some of the stories. I heard he had a margarita machine in his stateroom on the boat. Also heard there's a memorial for him under Miramar's Seawolf Departure overlooking the Pacific. He was one of the larger than life figures of Naval Aviation. Someone on the forums must have known him personally.

Default Atlas died in 1994

Rand "Atlas" McNally was killed in early April 1994. He flew into the water in the break at Alameda Naval Air Station in an A-6 Intruder.

Rand McNally was the definition of an overachiever. Straight A's at Notre Dame, Marine A-6 pilot, graduated Stanford Law School while flying for Delta and the Navy Reserves. And a heck of a nice guy. RIP Rand.
