Wrong. I have never made more money, flown more, or been home more doing this gig. I will work about 120 total days this year and pay more in taxes than I did my first two years at the regional.

I will agree that money is not everything. But the way I see it, I can make good money, then when I am home, take all kinds of long trips with my family. We have been out of the country twice this year, three 7+ day vacations, and another trip planned before the end of the year. Also, I got to see all of my kids plays, recitals, and took her to and from school. We did more as family than we ever have...or a ton more than any other family I know...because of time and money.

The math is easy for me...and for my family.

Another kicker, I did the airline gig and it sucked. The pay sucked, management sucked, schedule sucked, commute sucked, and the industry sucks. I HATE flying as a passenger now since I know what goes on behind the scenes. ZERO desire to go back.

Finally, its the mission that I enjoy. I found very little personal satisfaction being a freaking bus driver. What I do saves lives....

Small airbus capt in China max base pay now at $22.5/month = $270/year. That is on the min time at home schedule, and will be a lot less than you actually make...there is a lot of extra pay that you make.

That is for small Airbus Capt with type and 500 time in type.
-190 capt pays max base of $21.5/month.

That would be great, but I don't have a single hour in an Airbus or any airliner for that matter, so I don't think that they will hire me to be a Capt. But maybe!

There are several jobs I'm sure that you could throw at me that make $270 year starting, but you would have to have quals that I don't have right now. My quote was just making a joke about a miss-post earlier.

That is bad gouge. A year ago this would be correct but the contracts that are left are moving to TS. My company just upgraded everyone's clearance because you can't get on any of our contracts with just a secret anymore.

Also they will hire you with just a secret and pay the upgrade but if you don't at least have an ACTIVE secret then no dice. You may get an initial call but they will go with the low hanging fruit first.

If my TS expired in 13, does it automatically go to a Secret until 18?

It depends. If you're active duty, generally yes. If not, your security clearance gets suspended (not revoked) until you need it. If you reactivate within 2 years, it's typically not a big deal - after that it gets murkier and you may require a full background investigation.

If you're corporate TS to S, I'm not certain how that works...

how is it "bad gouge" when you just affirmed it in your second paragraph?
I got hired with a secret just a few months ago. Sure they might need you to upgrade....but you can and will get hired with a secret only...

Can I be hired by L3/Dynamic/Erickson with a current but inactive clearance? I have an active clearance now, but in between now and the mins they're asking for my clearance is likely to be deactivated and I'm not likely to take on any jobs that require a clearance until then.

My understanding is that with an active clearance, it can be deactivated for up to two years without requiring a full background check and simplly reactivated. Obviously, much of this depends on the specific who/what/when, but these are general guidelines. Additionally, some companies may have more stringent requirements.

EDITED TO ADD: I'm not an expert. I have worked with several different types of clearances in the past and administered some programs. There are exceptions to everything and many programs have very specific requirements.

I know that when I PCS my clearance is deactivated and then reactivated when I occupy an MTOE slot that requires a clearance. In short, after I leave the service I'll have about 2 years to meet those company minimums or is their a possibility that because I had a clearance in the past that they would be willing to pay for the SSBI if my clearance in not current?
