Medical Question for Flying on a Comm License
Hi there,
New to the forum and look forward to the abundance of information here.
I'm a military guy, recently got my Commercial & Instructor Certificates via the military equivalency option. I'm looking to get back to some civilian flying and had a question regarding the Medical Certificate required.
Currently all I'm looking to do is go to the local FBO and get my air legs back as I've been sitting a desk the last two years. Since I'll be flying on a commercial license will I need a Class II Medical? Or since the flying I'll be doing won't be for compensation or hire, but more for personal currency, can I get away with just using my current 1042 as a Class III Medical.
Thanks in advance.

The reg, 61.23 is phrased "...when exercising the ... privileges of ..." the certificate in question. So if you were being paid to fly you'd need the second class since it is required for commercial ops. If you're just puttering around on your own you'd only need the 3rd class or in your case, the 1042.
