Amazing that VR is hiring guys off the street. In the old days, we had more than enough Naval Aviators pounding on the door whenever we had selection boards.

Of course, that was LONG before Ensigns out of flight school could get VR orders.

Not off the street. You have to be a winged military aviator to get into Navy VR. Senior O-3's, junior O-4's.

Not true. I personally know several flight school straight to VR, pilots. At least 2 years ago they were doing this...not sure if it was a short time or "stop gap" measure, but they were LTjgs. Crazy.

That was in response to having too many pilots in the maritime training pipeline when the fleet requirements decreased. Instead of flooding the fleet with JOs, they sent the excess to VR. The first time was in 2005. Sweet deal for some...

Keep in mind they weren't SELRES, they initially had a shortened active duty commitment and then they could try to screen for FTS or SELRES. Most had no problem screening as "junior most qualified" was easy for them.

I know several of them. Those are few and far between billets, as was mentioned, to give them a home. Point being, they are winged

Off the street... Not happening.

That can't be career-enhancing for an AD aviator.

Starting as VR on AD....I don't know if there is a AD career path..unless it's FTS....weird circumstances to be sure....but I would assume that these few...will be jumping to a major ASAP with their 1000+ hours of 737 time and a type rating...and only 30y/o to boot....must be nice!
