In line with the O/P, 5-star Admiral Nimitz career was nearly cut short by running aground a ship very early in his career. Fortunately, clearer minds saw fit to 'give another chance'. Very often in life, overcoming mistakes is the 'stuff' of what molds strong character.

No doubt and I didn't mean to say that I'd disregard these guys. Only that sometimes things happen that are out of your control. Like the gear collapse I had on a C-310 back in the early days. A mechanical failure that was not fault of mine, however I see applications that specifically disallow ANY accidents or incidents. REALLY? That is just plain ignorant.
Colonels (base commanders in the AF) DO NOT want any aircraft mishaps occurring during their watch. Tends to wreck their promotion chances for a star and other associated senior officer goodies. I never knew or heard of an UNDERSTANDING base commander when it came to any aircraft mishap that occurred under his watch, regardless of the reasons. But that was almost 40 yrs ago when I was last active. Maybe things have changed? Doubt it!
