Maybe it is a difference between boom and drogue refueling; but even when I was in a mixed formation I don't remember such speeds.

USAF fighters do, probe and drouge are slower. Even at altitude on a KC-whatever in the hornet we were usually around 275. Probe limit was 300 to extend/retract, you could have it out up to 400. KC-130 was usually 210-230 and could be a challenge if you were heavy.

F-4 was 310 kts. Door was limited to 320 for opening and closing, but once opened, 400. One Atlantic crossing, KC-10 said to make the crossing, we needed to do 330 (headwinds), so just kept it open, and cycled a circuit breaker to make the fuel transfer when we weren't tanking.
Still ran him out of gas. Had to lauch a KC-135 from Maine to refuel the KC-10, and I think they refueled around 290-310.
THAT was a sight to see!
