Default Unmanned F-16 takes off

Looks like we are getting closer to unmanned jets throughout all aviation. It will interesting to see an unmanned airliner. So glad I'm on the training side of the map.

I'm sure this is higher technology and it ain't the first pilotless jet flight; they've been flying pilotless F-4s in the past, I believe, out of Mojave airport.

I got to work on a few of the "splash" engines for the QF-16 program. Old engines that aren't in service anymore. Pretty cool to see them in action. They put the splash engines in only for the remote part of the test. Better/newer engines when they have a pilot on board.

Haven't old fighters been turned into "drone" targets for decades now?

Yes. This is not any closer to being a true unmanned fighter than a predator, or a big RC model airplane (which is what it is).

Nothing to see here, move along.

I know they were using unmanned QF-100s when I was at Holloman in ... 1990!

Although not as sophisticated and requiring more support, it all goes back farther than that as far full sized radio controlled goes;

IIRC, there were also B17's laden with explosives to test the feasibility of radio controlled bombers that simply crash into the target area.

That's right.

Sully, who needs Sully? A dude in a cubicle at a desk can have a "miracle on the Hudson".

And hey, 70+ years later and we're STILL crashing drones.....

They've been working on unmanned Little Birds(MD-500) for about 10 years =/-.
