The first thing the Pentagon does when it hosts a test like this is to write the conclusion.

And 'round and 'round we go. When y'all finally start recognizing these capitalization boondoggles are being done with domestic civilian employment pork barreling at heart and not national security motivations, everything makes sense again in Sesame Street. But y'all can keep dusting off the Jane's books and slap fighting about 'tech and specs' while the people at the adult table line their pockets and gather more 'entitlement' voters until the military demographic becomes a straight up anachronism.

God, it's like watching the fighter guys belabor yet another Flag debrief while the tanker toads and the REMF E-tickets have been SAPRing it up in Freemont 4 hours ago already. Forest for the trees, fellas....

The interesting thing about this test is that the Chief of DoD testing is calling for it and writing the test requirements....the ball is NOT in the Pentagon's court.

I think the Chiefs of three services and a certain large defense contractor might be squirming a LOT, now.

"Hey Joe Grunt, if you had a choice, what airframe would you prefer to give you danger-close CAS if you were in danger of being overrun?"

"A F-35, of course."

Said no grunt, ever.

If the testing reveals a deficiency in the F-35’s ability to support troops at close range, the Air Force “will utilize all of the resources we have to be able to meet that CAS requirement if we find out that the F-35 is unable to do that at that point,” said Lt. Gen. Arnold W. Bunch, Jr., the Air Force’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Acquisition.
If? IF?!?!?!

125 x 25mm vs 1100 x 30mm. Gee, I wonder. Fights over before it begins. Loadout, on station time, operating cost, etc are just nails in the coffin. I can't wait to see how they spin the results of this clown show.

A-10 has 1150 rds of a bullet generating about 240,000 joules.

The F-35A has 182 rds (internal) generating about 100,000 joules.
The F-35B/C has a pod with about 220 rds.

I think a gun with 5-6x the amount of ammunition, delivering 2.5x the punch, might do a better job.
