Not a waste at all. I had 1000 hours of instruction before I went and it really helped a lot (it doesn't matter AS much if you are guard or reserve because all you need to do is pass, ranking doesn't matter for heavies).
Disclaimer though. I was fortunate enough to have bequeathed some money which allowed me to pay for all of my university and flying education, so the financial strain might be more difficult to get all the ratings beforehand, as the reserves/guard only requires you to have a PPL (I think).

I am at a regional now and was also just picked up by a guard unit in my hometown. Airlines are easy with military leave because in the end of the day they have reserves to cover what you can't. Just let them know when you need to leave as soon as you can and they just block off your schedule for it. They are definitely supportive of it and it doesn't seem to be a big deal. After just under a year at the regional, I'm about to leave, start UPT and then come back to better seniority as I will build it while at training. I think it's a great route to go.

Years ago guys with instrument ratings tended to do better in UPT. But even some of those guys wash out.
Perfect world? Get 1500 hrs, get a regional job with a flow through airline, get a ANG slot, return to home base and apply for other airlines while you wait for your flow date.

In my 3 years as a FAIP I really didn't see anyone come through UPT who had significant prior experience like the OP has have any trouble. I'm not saying it's a cake walk, but for the most part it seemed as though previous experience helped studs out right up to the Formation phase. Then all bets were off as to who would do well.

Not to get too far off topic. I still see a LOT of military guys paying for their own ATP CTP before joining a regional. DON'T! Any reputable regional carriers will pay it for you. Not sure how else to get the word out to mil guys.

Once off probation, you can even go active for months at a time and still retain your seniority. The particulars vary with the airline, but Federal law covers most of this.
