Even worse, as you illustrated, you aren't considered "military" by civilian employers...yet somehow you are subject to the UCMJ when at work on your "Federal job."

I think the ART idea will destroy the Guard and Reserve. Very few people would find it attractive.
As a former ART myself, I am not sure how they will make this work. Since this is not military service, the "mandatory" ART scenario is akin to indentured servitude. How will AFRC force someone to work in a civilian job? I can only see them going at this from the military angle. Say Lt Snuffy is not up to par with his ART duties. They then go after him via the military route which is the same as his civilian employer violating USERRA law.

I simply do not see how they can enforce this. We sign service "commitments" when we complete pilot training which is to serve 8 or 10 years after UPT. Reserve babies do not sign "civilian contracts" after UPT.

I am in charge of the hiring here at Dover. I'm getting plenty of interest. Granted, I have not vetted all of them yet. I am getting plenty of interest from guys over the age of 30. If they streamline age waiver process, it will help with some of the numbers.

I'm sure someone smarter than me will have it all figured out. I simply cannot see it.

They need to make all ARC aviators, at least pilot types, AGR. Then they'll have a leg in the fight when it comes to service commitments. However, they stand a chance of losing a lot of UPT candidates due to the fact that they'd be getting rid of one of the main benefits to ARC; being a "weekend warrior".

From what I see, a lot of our young guys out of UPT would cut their left nut off to be an ART. It's the Sr Captain and Major IP/EP types who can't leave fast enough.

There was a generation of dudes who came off AD in the late '90's into the ANG who got furlough after 9/11. They walked right into the ART program while sucking up all the alert they could to build their Title 10 time up. Some even landed AGR jobs later on when their companies recalled them and the unit couldn't "afford" to let them leave as full timers. The rest of us schmucks waited for years as bums for these guys with perfectly good airline jobs to go back to the airlines but stayed around the unit as full timers trying to land 3 retirements.

We pay for our own healthcare, dental, and vision. We pay into our own retirements with FERS contributions (anywhere from .8% to 4.4% of your pay depending on when you were hired) and have 401k "TSP" matching up to 5%. We are federal civilian employees, which explains why the airlines don't count it as "military duty". Should it count? In my opinion, yes because that is how the ARC mans its fulltime force. On the contrary, the AGR's we work hand in hand with CAN use their AGR time as "military duty" in order to go on mil leave from their company.

The Army side doesn't have Arts's but they have something similar and those guys seem happy. Is that because of less opportunity like the airline's or just a different thought process?
