All of Cape Air's flights REQUIRE two pilots. Every single one.

However, they have a waiver saying that they can use an autopilot instead.

On flights with FOs they just choose not to exercise that waiver.

It's really that simple!

I've heard it's pretty much all over the board from weeks to months. It's a really small department that does the hiring. When I got hired several years ago I just called or emailed the pilot recruitment office every week until I heard back. Good luck!

Only need two pilots when you(1) accept an instrument clearance,(2) Auto pilot is INOP or Captain has low time in 402 airframe.

Yes, I forgot about the VFR/IFR part... I spent the last year and a half out in STL, all we flew was IFR

However, even with a fully-functional autopilot, we still require a two-man crew. It's just that we have a WAIVER saying that we can use said fully-functional autopilot in lieu of him (or her). It's all in the wording. Saying they're not required if the AP is working is misleading. We can choose not to exercise that waiver even if the AP is working just fine... They're still "required."

9K has always been single pilot (autopilot) IFR, I do not know where you got the F/O requirement for this? As of yesterday they dropped the F/O's from the Midwest operation.

Mitragorz is correct... The SIC is always required unless the company uses the waiver (which is most of the time). Splitting hairs, really.

I don't understand the confusion here.

It's not just Cape Air, ALL part 135 operations carrying passengers under IFR must have an SIC unless they are authorized to use an autopilot in lieu of them.

If you were flying charter pax IFR in a 172 w/o an autopilot you would need an SIC.

135.101

"Except as provided in Sec. 135.105, no person may operate an aircraft carrying passengers under IFR unless there is a second in command in the aircraft."

135.105

"(a) . . .a person may operate an aircraft without a second in command, if it is equipped with an operative approved autopilot system and the use of that system is authorized by appropriate operations specifications.

(b) The certificate holder may apply for an amendment of its operations specifications to authorize the use of an autopilot system in place of a second in command."

It's that simple

It really is that simple, and the only reason why F/O's were required in the Midwest is for the code share agreement with Americant.
