Is becoming a CFI a must?
#22
Being a CFI helped me more than I though it would in the 121 world. CFI'ing trains you to know when to let your student go and make some mistakes and when to step in and take over. Invariably, the micro-managing captains who made the job way too hard on everybody were those who never worked as a CFI. Likewise, there were a few instances when as captain, I was in situations as the pilot monitoring and had to take over from a new FO who was just overwhelmed. Having been a CFI made deciding that easier and it also gave me the experience on how to calm people in stressful situations like those. Back then there were FO's coming in with just a few hundred hrs total time, so I had to keep a lot of awareness and empathy.
If you don't want to be a CFI because you don't like to train people, then 121 is the wrong business for you. All the 121 operations I know of require the captain to mentor the FO.
