Default Seasonal Allergies and Flying

Anyone had luck with a decent over the counter med for seasonal allergies that's FAA friendly? The pollen is kicking my arse this year (again).

The military will let you fly on Claritin and Allegra - so I'm sure the FAA would approve of those medications. Seems that a check on the FAA.gov website or a call to the local AME would be your safest bet though.

Anybody go through an immuntherapy regime (allergy shots)? Allergies are seriously kicking my arse too....allegra and claritin don't seem to do a whole lot for me. I started the allergy shots once, but never got very far and didn't finish. Anyone with positive results?

Also, how about the cortizone nasal sprays like Flonase or Nasonex, anyone use them with good results?

I did two years of immunotherapy. I did this before I was flying however. When I'm in the area I did the immunotherapy, I'm fine. But then I bounce from place to place, and sure enough the allergies hit me hard in certain areas this time of year. I've also taken allegra and claritin, and neither one does squat for me. I'm getting my arse kicked this year. Last year was great, this year sucks.

I bought the Claritin tablets that supposedly last 24 hours and melt on your tongue (they taste fine). However, that minute hour 23 nearly elapses my throat is all itchy again.

The FAA lets me use allegra and nasonex, between the two it clears me up.

www.aviationmedicine.com is a great resource for finding out what medication and conditions are acceptable. As always it is best to consult with your AME on any condition or medication to determine if it is disqualifying.

I have reported "claritin, taken occasionally for seasonal allergies" for about 4 years now on the form, and the AME has recommended it.
