Default Diabetes & Medical Cert

Does anyone know what kind of medical certificate you can get if you have type 2 diabetes under control?

Assuming you mean insulin-dependent, it is third class only and there are some special requirements you must meet while you fly.

If you are not insulin-dependent, you can probably get a higher medical if you can control blood sugar within normal ranges with diet and exercise. I'm not sure if that would even be considered diabetic.

Go to www.jetcareers.com and ask the Dr. over there. But I believe if you have type 2 you can still hold a first class if you wait 60 days and provide a good record of blood sugar control.

I would go ask your AME.

Normally I would say pay a consultant before you talk to the FAA, but with diabetes you do not want fool around...it has incapacitated more than one pilot in flight and for your own safety you do not want to take any shortcuts.

Thanks for all of your responses. I'll check with an AME.

you can still hold a first with type 2 , you must demonstrate 60 days of controll before certification. Type 1 limits you to a third class only.

As long as insulin is not required and you can demonstrate 60 days of blood sugar control you can be issued a 1st or 2nd class medical. insulin dependent... 3rd class only.... my AME actually had a guy on an insulin pump holding a 3rd class and he flies a pits special....LOL
