Default Attention Deficit Disorder

Hello everyone,

I am currently a junior in high school. I was diagnosed with ADD in 4th grade. I have been on Adderall XR for pretty much the entire time. I have tried a few other medications for it, but I don't remember which ones. I am currently taking 50mg of Adderall XR a day. I only take my meds on school days, to help me concentrate on my homework. I am not in anyway dependent on the drugs. I am currently taking flight lessons and should solo pretty soon. I just need to get my 3rd Class Medical. I know my mom will not let me off my medicine as long as I am in school. Will this disqualify me from getting my 3rd Class Medical? How long do I need to be off the medication in order to receive the medical? I have wanted to be an airline pilot my entire life, and I would be devestated if that dream is taken away from me due to the fact that I have ADD. I am a very smart kid, I just have trouble concentrating on things I don't absolutely love, like homework. I love aviation however, and spend most of my time studying airline manuals and jeppesen charts. Even if I am off the meds for the specified amount of time, will a major airline even consider hiring me, if I pass the first class medical?

Best Regards,
Robert

Robert,

I did a google search and it seems as if it is not possible to obtain a FAA medical certificate if you are currently taking adderall. If you can function and get by without taking meds, it appears that there is a process which allows you to get a medical even if you have been diagnosed with ADHD.

Of course I am no expert in this area, but you seem like a very fine young man that has a goal in mind. I would certainly look into this further. Good luck to you...
