Default Segment Ht for Progressive Sunglass Lenses

Guys and Gals,

I'm trying to get feedback for when I order Progressive sunglasses for pilots. Yes I'm a pilot, but I don't actually wear glasses.

Definition:
Segment Height - where the glasses transitions from Far vision to Near vision, about the center vertically.

When you get progressives (readers) sunglasses from your eyedoc, they usually will just use the standard Segment Height that they give people who they assume use it to read a book or something similar.

Question: Do you find that the segment height should be higher for cockpit use? Example: Height of most sunglasses is about 38mm, Segment height is usually about 19-20mm. I tend to favor 21mm for the cockpit (2/3 inside, 1/3 outside view). Thoughts?

Thanks,

Arby

(This sounds like advertising, but it's a serious question)

My Optometrist does set mine up a few mm, but I do not know how much. And for the reason that you cite; I found that the standard was too low for cockpit use.

My experience too. The transition on standard bifocals cut right through the PFD.

The easy way is a crayon in the cockpit, sit in the seat in the seat, look around, draw a line on your other glasses where the windshield/cockpit split. Do not smudge line, take to Doc..........

All good thoughts. I seem to use the mid point vertically Plus 2 mm and I say it works for about 98% of the pilots. At this point I have done about 50 progressives for pilots.

Keep the inputs coming.
