Yes. Logging time is well defined in 14 CFR, both part 1.1 and part 61. Look at 14 CFR part 1.1 - Definitions. There is no definition for "total time". In fact, the column in your logbook that everyone thinks of as "total time" doesn't say that - it says "flight time". And it needs to be just that - time in actual flight. "Flight time" is defined in part 1.1. The closest you can come to the "total time" is a definition in part 1.1 for "pilot time". This includes all flight, sim, ect. time. You could create (pencil in) a column in your logbook for "pilot time" and use that.
Time in any simulator, regardless of level, is "simulator time" and "dual recieved". Since no simulator actually flys, none of it is flight time. This subject has been throughly covered in the flight training section.
