lol groovinaviator I hope you told him he was full of it... I've personally never failed one and I kinda wish I had because I'm sitting here knowing my time is coming since it hasn't yet lol. Jenn what did you get busted on? Oral or flying? It's perfectly ok. Point is to learn from mistakes. If you fail a second time for the same reason then some issues will rise up.

Oh I'm sure, there's always that "One Guy" that gets his jollies off failing someone because they "Didn't know it all." Well here's the thing, CFI's are learning just as much or more than their students!!!!
I lucked out, my CFI was with a DPE at my college, so didn't have to go to the FSDO!!! Still failed, but I just blanked on one thing. Funny thing is, through that school, I took 4/5 check-rides with this guy, now that I'm flying charter, he's my companies POI(Primary Ops Inspector). I'm thinking at my next check-ride doing a combined 6-month and ATP at the same time.

I'm still yet to fail one. 10-0. I still have to take my ATP ride and if I get this job that I am going for, I'll have to take one there, so we will see... I am proud of the fact, but not cocky, arogant, or otherwise, definintely not.
We say the same thing about tailwheel pilots. There are those who have ground-looped and those who are yet too!
Im just finishing up my instrument rating right now, actually all I have to do is a hold and ILS approach and im done. My questions is, is there a number of checkrides per say that if you fail you can kiss a flying career goodbye? I havent failed yet (crosses fingers/ knocks on wood) but am curious.

What ratings do you have to have taken 10 checkrides?
SEL, MEL, INST S, INST M, Comm S, Comm M, CFI, CFII, MEI, SES, MES
Something like that or are you counting 135 checks and such?
I have had 5 checkrides (which in the spirit of the thread I have never failed). These 5 are not including 135 checks. SEL, MEL, Inst M, Comm Multi, Comm Single

What they're concerned about is a pattern of behavior. Failed one ride? Not a big deal, everyone (mostly) has. Failed two rides? Maybe not too much of an issue depending on your story. Failed every ride the first time? Probably a big deal. The CFI ride is one that most interviewers don't weigh one failure too heavily on. They almost expect it. Every time I ever interviewed, they asked if I ever failed a checkride. When I say I failed my initial CFI, they don't ask many questions.

The rest of us use it as a humbling (although quite frustrating both mentally and financially) learning experince.
??? What are you smoking? Most guys I know have never failed a check ride. I've never failed one and now that I am at a major I don't ever expect to. These days I take annual 3 day sim sessions. These are mostly crew oriented training. Sure, it is possible to fail but not really. Guys only fail if they don't remember the aircraft limitations and/or memory items and/or make a major blunder in judgement during a flight scenario.
